20 Something and Dating

I've said it once, and I'll say it again, I am becoming more and more convinced that our generation has neglected to pick up on the ever so important habit of dating. So many of us get hung up on the idea of being in a relationship, or the lack of being in one, that we forget the important steps needed to have a successful, happy and fulfilling relationship. It really isn't entirely our fault though. As a generation we've been exposed to more distractions than the generations before us. Things like Instant Messanger, texting, FaceTime, chat rooms and social media have completely changed the way we meet people. Whether thats a good or bad thing, opinions differ.

Unless you've been living under a rock I'm sure you've heard of the latest James Franco fiasco, but in case you haven't, I'll fill you in. Long story short, Franco met a girl outside of his Broadway show in New York earlier this week. They took photos together that the girl later tagged Franco in. This led to the most awkward set of Instagram direct messages and text messages that were leaked to the public. This just shows you how times have changed. JAMES fucking FRANCO has resorted to Instagram to pick up a girl. I may be biased, but I'm pretty sure he can get pretty much anyone under the sun and yet he still used a form of social media as a way to get a date.

Why do so many of us turn to texting or emailing or whatever to get to know someone? Things get lost in translation. The tone of what you're saying can get completely misinterpreted and, even worse, you can quickly run out of things to text about. (I mean how many of us have taken part in the classic "Hey" "Hey. Whats up?"Nothing. You?" kind of conversation that inevitably leads to an abrupt end to conversation) <-- can you say awkward?

I am in no way saying that we should all never use these things, I'm just saying that maybe we should take a second, step back, and try to connect with people in different ways. If you meet someone online, call them and set up a date because comments, texts and direct messages can only go so far. Dating these days is incredibly difficult and a little bit awkward but at least we're all going through this stage together, right?
